Cape Fear Christian Academy hosted four volleyball matches on Thursday and posted wins in three of those.
The CFCA middle school team opened its season with a Southeastern Conference doubleheader against Liberty Christian. The young Eagles prevailed, 2-0, in both matches. Scores were 25-11 and 25-17 in the first match and 25-12 and 25-8 in the second match.
The CFCA middle school team hosts Freedom Christian for a SEMSAC doubleheader on Monday at 4 p.m.
The Eagles junior varsity improved to 3-0 despite dropping its first set against Freedom on Thursday. CFCA came back for a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Freedom overcame CFCA, 3-0, in the Sandhills Athletic Conference varsity contest with power and precision at the net.
“I told the girls, ‘Sometimes you play somebody better,'” said Calvin Gaines, who coaches the Eagles’ JV and varsity teams. “You learn and improve when you play good competition.”
CFCA has added junior Meghan Taylor to the varsity. Junior Kristen Bass and Taylor are the only varsity players who aren’t on the junior varsity.
The Eagles varsity is in the Falcon Classic in Sanford on Saturday with host Lee Christian, Berean Baptist and Northwood Temple. CFCA plays Berean at 10:15 a.m., Lee at 11:30 and Northwood Temple at 3:15 p.m.
The consolation final is at 4:30 p.m. and the championship follows at 5:45.
