Coats-Erwin Middle School improved to 3-2 on the season with an 18-0 win over visiting Western Harnett on Wednesday.

Dunn turned back Shughart, 7-0, at Homecoming for the Greenwaves.

The Falcons took a 12-0 halftime lead, then added a third score early in the third quarter.

Coats-Erwin scored on its opening possession when Eligah Holmes broke loose on a 45-yard run. Holmes added a second touchdown late in the second quarter on a 60-yard run.

Coats-Erwin extended its lead to 18-0 when James Shaw took the second half kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown.

Western Harnett mounted a drive late in the game, but the Falcon defense stiffened and halted the drive to preserve the shutout.

The Falcons host Harnett Central next week in their season finale, while the Cardinals play Highland (5-0).

Greenwaves close with win

Dunn (2-4) closed its season with two wins, scoring with about two minutes remaining Wednesday on a 4-yard bootleg pass from Jaeshaun Murchison to Avery Ellington.

The Greenwaves converted a 4th-and-12 with a 36-yard completion from Murchison to Ziachia Taylor to set up the score.

Carter Daughtry kicked the extra point. The defense held for four downs and the offense knelt to end the game.

Murchison had 51 yards passing. Ellington had two receptions for 15 yards.

“It wasn’t pretty, but we made plays when we had to and got the win,” said Dunn coach John Gage. “Defense played great.”

Nick Parrilla and Chris Monk have been coordinating the defense for the Greenwaves.

Greenwaves nose guard Trejon Lindsey had five tackles, including four for losses with two sacks. Lindsey forced a fumble and had a fumble recovery in addition to a pair of quarterback hurries.

Dunn corner Zibeon Sparks had three stops, including one for a loss. Linebacker Zack Winters had three tackles with one for a loss.

Tackle Jordan Mantle had two tackles, one for a loss. At linebacker, Murchison had two tackles, one for a loss. Corner Jackson Lanier had two tackles and broke up three passes. End Richard Bell had a sack and forced a fumble.
