There was a packed house at Dunn Middle School on Thursday to see the Greenwaves host rival Coats-Erwin for a pair of basketball games between unbeaten teams. In the end it was Coats-Erwin’s girls and Dunn’s boys that came away still undefeated on the season.
Coats-Erwin edged Dunn 33-30 in a competitive defensive battle in the girls game.
Ashari Watlington had 13 points, Neshara McNeill had 10 points, Carleigh Hemby had eight points and SueAnna Bass had two points for the Falcons (4-0).
The Greenwaves (3-1) were led by a 17-point effort from JaNiah Smith.
Chyna Massey and Unique Cooke had four points apiece. Stephanie Davis and Virginia Pope had two points apiece. Jamia Covington had one point.
After shutting out Dunn in the first quarter and taking a 5-0 lead, Coats-Erwin led for most of the contest.
With the Falcons leading 24-17 late in the third, Smith beat the buzzer at the end of the quarter with a three-pointer to cut the lead to four. The Greenwaves continued the run with a pair of baskes in the fourth, tying the game at 24 on a score from Davis.
With the score tied at 27 late in the fourth, Watlington scored with just over one minute left to put the Falcons back in front. McNeill later pushed the lead to four with a pair of free throws.
After three from Smith cut the lead to just one, Watlington made two more free throws to extend the lead to three and Coats-Erwin denied Dunn a chance to get one last shot off, holding on for the win.
Dunn started strong and finished strong in a 53-29 win over Coats-Erwin in the boys game.
Qua’Shaun Williams had nine points and Ahmad Morris and Nick Roberson had eight points apiece to lead the Greenwaves (4-0).
Will Watson had six points. Ro’mello Pegues, Camrien McNeil and Matthew Strickland had four points apiece. Chandler Miles and Ke’Quan Kenner had three points apiece. Joshua Cameron and Ezekial Dixon had two points apiece.
Winston Waite paced the Falcons (3-1) with 15 points.
Aaron Roberts had four points. J.J. Cowan had three points. Zamonte’ McDougald, Grant Pope and A.J. Dewar had two points apiece. Jayden Williams had one point.
Dunn outscored Coats-Erwin in all four quarters: 14-4 in the first, 12-11 in the second, 10-8 in the third and 17-6 in the fourth.
Coats-Erwin will be at home against Overhills and Dunn will travel to Highland on Monday.
