Coats-Erwin posts hoops sweep of Western Harnett

Coats-Erwin took a middle school basketball sweep over visiting Western Harnett on Monday.

Relentless defense led Coats-Erwin’s girls to a 39-15 win over Western Harnett to stay unbeaten on the season.

Abby Hood had 17 points and Ava Blackman had 10 points to lead the Falcons (4-0). Carleigh Hemby and Caylon Avery had four points apiece, McKenna Moore had two points and Marley Colville had one point.

Maddie Burns had nine points, Shay McCants had four points and Trinity Gaither had two points for the Cardinals.

Coats-Erwin dominated the game, outscoring Western in all four quarters: 16-5 in the first, 10-6 in the second, 8-2 in the third and 5-2 in the fourth.

In the boys game, Coats-Erwin took the early lead in a competitive first half before a strong third-quarter performance allowed the Falcons to pull away in a 45-28 win over Western Harnett.

William Heard had 11 points to pace the Falcons (3-1).

Nate McKoy and Jalen Evans had eight points apiece. Zamonte McDougald, Deandre Smith and James Shaw had four points apiece. Grant Pope, C.J. Herring and Jaleel White had two points apiece.

Ian Bristow had 13 points, Devonte Shelvin had 11 points, Logan Kelly had three points and Remauri Willis had one point for the Cardinals.

Coats-Erwin opened the game with an 11-3 run and held a 13-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. But Western outscored Coats-Erwin 12-9 in the second to cut the lead to 22-17 at halftime.

The Falcons came out of the locker room hot in the second half, going on a 13-2 run through the third quarter to take a 35-19 lead and outscored the Cardinals 10-9 in the fourth to finish the game with a win.

Coats-Erwin travels to Highland Tuesday to make up game postponed from Dec. 10 by inclement weather. The girls game will be for sole possession of first place in the Harnett County Conference, as both the Falcons and Vikings are unbeaten.

Coats-Erwin is at Harnett Central and Western Harnett is at home against Overhills in Thursday games.
