Coats-Erwin took a middle school basketball sweep on the road against Harnett Central on Thursday, with both the girls and boys teams improving to 5-1 on the season.
After falling by a single point in a battle of unbeatens at Highland on Tuesday, Coats-Erwin’s girls bounced back from taking their first loss of the season by taking a 29-13 win over Harnett Central on Thursday.
Abby Hood paced the Falcons with 23 points and Marley Colville, Ashari Watlington and Caylon Avery had two points apiece.
Victoria Langdon, Avery Fortune and Jana Booker had four points apiece and Emma Womack had one point for the Raiders.
Fortune scored to give Central the early lead, but Hood responded with nine unanswered point to give Coats-Erwin a 9-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Hood continued her run in the second quarter, adding six more unanswered points (a combined 15-0 run) before Fortune scored to end the run. But Coats-Erwin held a double-digit lead for the rest of the contest.
In the boys game, Coats-Erwin took the lead early and held off Harnett Central late, edging the Raiders 30-24.
William Heard had 20 points to lead the Falcons, Nate McKoy had six points, Jalen Evans had two points and Deandre Smith and James Shaw had one point apiece.
Nicholas Avery led the Raiders with 11 points and Jonathon Patterson had five points, Camauri McDonald and Bryson Monroe had three points apiece and Jahlil Cates-Surles had two points.
Coats-Erwin opened the game with a 6-2 run before Avery scored a pair to tie it. But a McKoy free throw and a Heard score gave Coats-Erwin a 9-6 lead at the end of the first.
The Falcons went on an 8-3 run through the second quarter, capped by Heard scoring at the buzzer for a 17-9 lead at the half.
Central battled in the second half, but was unable to cut the lead to less than five as Coats-Erwin held on for the win.
Coats-Erwin is at home against Highland and Harnett Central is at Overhills on Thursday. Coats-Erwin’s girls will be looking to avenge their lone loss of the season and pull into a first place tie in the Harnett County Conference standings.
