Coats-Erwin is on top of the Harnett County Conference in both boys and girls middle school basketball after taking a sweep at rival Dunn on Monday.
Another strong defensive performance led Coats-Erwin to a 37-18 win over Dunn in the girls game for a season sweep of the Greenwaves.
Ashari Watlington led the Falcons (8-1) with 13 points, Abby Hood had 10 points, Carleigh Hemby had eight points and Anna Wilson had six points.
JaNiah Smith had six points, Reagan Adams and Jamia Covington had four points apiece and Stephanie Davis and Chya Massey had two points apiece for the Greenwaves (2-8).
At the end of a competitive first quarter, the score was tied 6-6. But Coats-Erwin outscored Dunn 9-2 in the second quarter and 16-4 in the third to pull away.
Falcon boys win, 59-33
Coats-Erwin’s boys team avenged its lone loss of the season by routing Dunn 59-33, claiming sole possession of conference first place.
William Heard had 17 points, Nate McKoy had 14 points and Jalen Evans had 13 points to lead the Falcons (8-1).
Aaron Roberts had eight points, James Shaw had five points and Jaleel White had two points.
Xander Johnson and Jaeshaun Murchison had eight points apiece to lead the Greenwaves (8-2).
Barrington Kerr had seven points, Qua’shaun Williams had four points, Ziachia Taylor had three points, Carter Daughtry had two points and Ro’mello Pegues had one point.
Coats-Erwin held a 13-10 lead at the end of a close first quarter before outscoring Dunn 18-6 in the second, 11-7 in the third and 17-10 in the fourth.
Coats-Erwin is at home against Overhills and Dunn is at Highland on Thursday.
