Triton running back Javon “J.J.” Cowan will move to the next level of his football career at Campbell.
Cowan ran for 599 yards on 63 carries with 10 touchdowns as freshman in 2020.
“We knew his freshman year that if he did the right things in the classroom and weight room he would have the opportunity to play at the next level,” said Hawks coach Ben Penny “We are excited for this opportunity for him to represent our community as not only a football player but as an outstanding young man in general.”
Cowan had 111 carries for 898 yards with seven TDs in 2021. He also had four receptions for 147 yards.
As a junior in 2022, Cowan ran 112 times for 827 yards with 17 scores and had four catches for 72 yards with a pair of TDs.
Cowan’s senior numbers included 134 rushes for 1,268 yards with 17 touchdowns and one catch for 18 yards.
A late addition to the East roster for the East-West All-Star game in Greensboro on December 16, Cowan ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns to earn Offensive MVP honors. His scoring forays covered 67 and 48 yards.
Cowan also contributed defensively in 2023 with 27 solo tackles, nine assists and four pass deflections as a defensive back.
Barton, Catawba and Eastern Kentucky also showed recruiting interest, but a visit from new Campbell coach Braxton Harris proved influential.
“We want to thank Coach Harris and his staff for being present in our schools and giving J.J. this opportunity,” Penny said. “J.J. was all in with Campbell since the first of the year.”
Cowan also has played basketball for four years at Triton. He averaged 8.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1,1 steals for a 20-8 team as a senior.
He competed in track and field during his freshman and sophomore years.
