J.J. Cowan and Jalen Evans each scored a pair of touchdowns for Triton in a 26-14 varsity football victory in the All American Conference opener for the Hawks at E.E. Smith on Friday night.
Cowan had a 51-yard scoring run and returned a fumble from around midfield in the first quarter for a TD to help Triton (2-2) to a 14-0 lead.
The Golden Bulls tied the score at 14 before Evans directed a pair of scoring drives that were capped by keepers from 2 and 4 yards out in the fourth quarter.
“It was a hard-fought game,” said Triton coach Ben Penny. “We came out pretty strong with J.J. scoring on a long run and a long strip fumble return but fell flat after that. (Cowan) came out in the second quarter with an injury and we weren’t able to adjust to not having him on defense until halftime.
“The kids answered the bell in the second half and played very physical defense. Jalen, again, took control of the ball game running the football. He made some unbelievable plays in the second half.
“Proud of our team for rallying behind each other. E.E. Smith is a much-improved football team. We have to heal up and get ready for a big one next week at home against Terry Sanford.”
The Bulldogs (3-1) started league play with a 55-12 win against visiting Overhills on Friday night.
