Romello Cowan pushed his touchdown total to 16 for the season with five scores in Triton’s 46-19 nonconference varsity football win at West Johnston on Friday night.
A pass from J.P. Petoletti to Travion Sanders set up Cowan’s first score from 1 yard out with 9:19 left in the first quarter.
Cowan had a 30-yard touchdown run as the Hawks went ahead 13-0 with 5:39 to go in the first quarter. He had a 20-yard run to the end zone with 11:03 left in the first half. His 21-yard score helped the Hawks to a 25-7 lead at halftime.
Malik McNeill had a 3-yard TD run for Triton with 5:10 remaining in the third quarter.
After a West turnover on a fumble, Cowan added his last score of the night. Malachi Batts ran for Triton’s final TD.
Triton improved to 2-3 going into a nonconference game at home against Fike on Friday.
The Hawks were without two-way starters Grayson Bradham and Mike Carvin. Bradham, who starts at linebacker and guard, sustained a foot injury in practice. Carvin, the conference champion in wrestling at heavyeight, starts at nose tackle on defense and left tackle on offense. He had an MRI on a knee Friday after an injury in last week’s game.
“I’m very pleased at the fact we took care of business,” said Triton coach Ben Penny. “With Grayson and Big Mike out, we needed some guys to step up and they did. Tra and Mello continue to carry the load on offense. They are playing on an elite level right now.
“We needed a big win and to come out healthy. Next week will be huge for us. We are capable of getting back to .500 before the bye week.”
