BUIES CREEK — Bastien Oberli scored the only goal of the match on a 14th minute penalty kick to lead Campbell to a 1-0 win over Davidson Saturday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

Samuel Lechuga made two key second-half saves to record his first shutout and Campbell (3-2) extended its winning streak to three matches.

Davidson (2-2) entered the contest coming off wins over UNCG and Furman, but the Wildcats were blanked for the first time this season.

“I’m very pleased with the grittiness of our performance,” said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder. “Three weeks ago we were a talented, but not a very good team. Each week we have grown and become a better team. Tonight was a total team performance.”

Campbell took the first six shots of the night and went in front after Oberli was hauled down in the area by Davidson’s John Dale. The sophomore from Switzerland curled the ball past Wildcat keeper Sawyer Gaffney and Campbell went ahead to start a match for the first time since the Aug. 26 season opener against UIC.

Just seven minutes later, Oberli again dribbled into the box and unleashed a left-footed shot that Gaffney dove to save. The rebound fell to Oberli, but his shot sailed just high of the crossbar.

Campbell outshot the Wildcats 8-2 in the opening half, but could not add another strike.

Davidson’s best chance of the evening came early in the second half when Quinn Dudek’s header forced Lechuga to leave his feet to keep the game level. In the 54th minute, Jackson Bracy redirected the ball on net, but right into Lechuga’s waiting arms.

The Camels finished the night with an 11-5 edge in shots, 3-2 in attempts on target. Lechuga and Gaffney each made two saves.

Campbell’s three-match home stand continues Wednesday when the Camels host VMI at 7 p.m.
