BUIES CREEK — Campbell freshman Shy Tuelle hit a 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime, but Howard outscored the Camels 10-5 in the extra session, as the visiting Bison defeated CU 69-64 in the ninth annual Campbell Education Day on Thursday.

The loss ended a seven-game winning streak for the Camels (7-2), who had not lost since their season opener against Old Dominion on Nov. 6. With the win, Howard improved to 6-3.

After trailing by as many as 14, the Camels went into the final period down by two, 44-42. The two sides traded baskets on each of their first possessions in the fourth quarter, but the Camels went scoreless over the next 6:07 minutes until Hayley Barber ended the drought with a lay-up. Over that span, the Bison went on an 8-0 run, leading by 10 (54-44) with 3:35 remaining.

However, Barber’s lay-in ignited a 10-2 run that was capped by back-to-back three’s from Bowns and Kyra Davis, pulling the Camels back to within two, 56-54, with 29.8 seconds remaining.

Edmond scored again for the Bison on a lay-up before Micaila Coleman responded with her own lay-in with nine seconds to go. The Camels fouled Edmond to send her to free-throw line as she missed the first and made the second.

Trailing by three with just 7.1 seconds to go, Barber found Shy Tuelle for a left-corner three to tie the score at 59-59, sending the game into overtime. The Camels were unable to take the lead in overtime, twice pulling to within one point of the Bison as Howard went away with the 69-64 final decision.

Howard’s Star Greer-Fitzgeral led all scorers with 18 points, while Edmond added 16 points. Kyra Davis was the lone Camel to score in double-figures, tallying 12 points. The sophomore also pulled down 10 boards for her first career double-double.

Half a dozen Camels scored at least six points in the contest: Davis (12), Taya Bolden (9), Shy Tuelle (9), Hayley Barber (8), Caroline Bowns (6) and Luana Serranho (6). Ashlyn Hampton totaled seven rebounds.

Just 26 seconds into the game, Coleman opened up the scoring on Campbell’s first possession with a lay-in. Howard also scored on its first possession via a jumper by Sarah Edmond, which sparked a 14-2 run over the remainder of the quarter, earning Howard the 14-4 advantage after one.

After shooting just 23 percent in the first quarter, the Camels shot 47 percent in the second quarter, which included a 4-for-5 effort by Bolden; she scored nine of CU’s 19 second-period points. The Camels trailed by as many as 14; however, a Bolden jumper at the 4:56 mark sparked an 8-2 run to pull the Camels within six, 27-21. Howard went in to the half with a 31-23 advantage.

Howard held a 46-36 edge at the glass and outscored Campbell 22-10 in points off turnovers. The Camels outscored the Bison 37-13 off the bench and in the paint, 20-18.

The Lady Camels play at Boston College on Friday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m.
