BUIES CREEK — Alexa Genas netted the game winning goal in the 81st minute as Campbell defeated Charleston Southern 2-1 to advance to the Big South Conference women’s soccer tournament for the fifth consecutive season.
Campbell will face Radford in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. in Matthews.
Genas gathered a failed clearance off a corner and fired a shot through traffic to the bottom right corner from 15 yards out. Genas’ goal marked the her ninth of the season and her sixth goal over the last four matches.
“Before the game, we talked about set pieces,” said head coach Samar Azem. “We executed very well and I’m so proud of our girls. To get those two goals off set pieces was quality.”
In the 19th minute, Sidney Doherty opened the scoring line after Peyton Motley played a through ball to Doherty who finished over a diving Erin Scott.
Twenty minutes later in the 39th minute, Rosie O’Neal netted the equalizer off a rebound after McKenna de Graaf fired off a shot that was saved by Jazmin Gonzalez.
Erin Scott picked up the win between the pipes with two saves with just one goal allowed over the full 90 minutes of action.
Campbell (7-10-1) doubled the Buccaneers shot on goal total with six and the Camels were also able to produce three more corner kick opportunities, five-to-two.
Charleston Southern’s (9-6-2) best equalizing chance came in the 63rd minute when the Buccaneers drew a foul to set up a free kick from Grace Clark who sent the shot high.
Sunday’s 2-1 decision marked the same result as when the two squads met earlier in the season on October 3.
