Gunner Dorman scored two goals for host Cape Fear Christian Academy in a 3-1 Mid-Carolina Conference varsity boys soccer win over Bradford on Friday.
The Eagles (4-2-1) improved to 4-0-1 in their last five games as Dorman, a freshman, continued his recent offensive surge with his fifth goal in the last two matches.
The outcome put CFCA at 2-1 in league play going into a rematch Friday at Bradford (1-4, 0-3 MCC).
The Eagles had a commanding 16-4 lead in shots on goal in the first half, but their lead was just 2-1.
“I told our guys to keep doing what they were doing and eventually the goals would come,” said CFCA coach Bill Parrish.
Dorman had five shots on goal. Caden Scarborough had nine shots on goal and one assist. Taylor Smith had two shots on goal and one score on a carom off an Archers player.
Cade Godwin had three shots on goal. Thomas Honeycutt and Tyson Stephens had two shots on goal each. Fisher Stancil had one shot on goal, appearing to score late in the game as he pushed the ball across the goal line with his chest. The tally was wiped off by a hand ball call.
Justin Chestnut had four saves behind a defense led by Conner Parrish, Chris Crume, Eli Burns, Micah Andemichael and Lathan Wilborn, who was assigned to mark Bradford’s best offensive player.
