Dunkins scores 29 as CFCA varsity boys move past Lee Falcons for 70-56 MCC win

Kayden Dunkins scored 29 points for Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity boys basketball team in a 70-56 Mid-Carolina Conference win over visiting Lee Christian on Tuesday night.

Dunkins made 14 of 26 field goal attempts as the Eagles improved to 13-5 overall and 5-0 in league play.

The Eagles are ranked No. 3 among NCISAA 1-A teams in the MaxPreps rankings as of January 10 and the Falcons (12-4) are ranked No. 2.

Lee took an early 14-8 lead, but the Eagles came back to go ahead, 17-16, at the close of the first quarter on a basket by Lathan Wilborn.

CFCA opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run and maintained an advantage the rest of the way.

Dunkins scored 17 in the second half.

“We had a lot of fun accepting the challenge from Lee,” said Eagles coach Dwain Ellis.

Dunkins had 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Caden Scarborough contributed 16 points, seven assists, three steals and went four for seven from beyond the arc.

Justin Chestnut’s double-double included 11 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks.

Wilborn totaled nine points, four rebounds and two steals. Cade Godwin finished with five points and four assists. Elijah Ellis had four points, four rebounds and three steals. Conner Parrish controlled four rebounds.

Varsity Girls

Lee was a 71-37 winner in the girls game despite 17 points by Glenna McLamb for CFCA (3-8, 2-3 MCC).

Lily Kate Dupree scored six. Tallying four each were Grace Bruha, Ella Wilborn and Hailey Wangelin. Courtney Butss added two points.

Junior Varsity Boys

CFCA improved to 4-1 with a 63-28 win over Lee as Fisher Stancil had 20 points and four rebounds. Eli Shwaikeh scored 17.

Cade Godwin and Eli Burns had five points each. Donald O’Meara, Tyson Stephens and Lathan Wilborn had four points apiece. Wilborn grabbed eight rebounds. Steve Hicks and Taylor Smith scored two points each.

Middle School Boys

Shwaikeh had 26 pounts on Thursday in a 50-7 win at Lee Christian.

Reid Jones had seven points.

Sawyer Tyndall and River Stancil each had three points. The Eagles got two points each from Luke Meyer, carter Glass, Ben Thompson, Sam Hudson and Jayce Barker. Henry Smith scored one point.

Middle School Girls

Carolina Wynns scored 12 points and Bijou Hester returned from an injury with 10 points in a 34-24 victory at Lee.

Knorah Whitmore had seven points. Kamryn Knight and Hayden Deese each had two points and Ella Shwaikeh added one point.

CFCA had a total of 18 steals.

Upcoming

The Eagles host Harrells on Monday for JV boys, varsity girls and varsity boys games beginning at 4 p.m.

The CFCA middle school teams will be at home Tuesday to take on Lee beginning at 4 p.m
