As it says in Ecclesiastes, there is a time and season for everything under the sun.

There was a time for Dunn Area Sports to fill a niche, but the time has come to suspend operations.

I’m going back to The Daily Record and to avoid duplication of effort, my focus will be devoted to the paper that brought me to this community in 1982, for which I am very grateful.

I seldom write in the first person but my thanks to photojournalist John Lucas, photographer Paul Burgett, website designer Sara Whitford and her dad, Danny Whitford, an Internet pioneer, for their help.

My wife, Barbara, took pictures at most every home event at Cape Fear Christian Academy, where I retired as athletic director in May. Our Eagles teams and athletes got a lot of coverage, but I felt it was important for them to be recognized. Winning the Wells Fargo Cup for 2024-25 for the NCISAA 1-A Class was a great way to go out.

Thanks to sponsors Ricky Symmonds (Kim’s Restaurant), Derek Mangum (Mangum Insurance), Ashlyn Thompson (REMAX Realty) and WCKB for their support.

I plan to leave the Dunn Area Sports website up as an archive. Just type in a search and click. I probably will be using it as a resource myself for the DR.

Thanks to all the coaches who provided information. You’ll still be getting calls and texts from me with my new/old responsibilities.

DAS launched in February of 2018. That was roughly 350,000 hits ago. I was surprised in the web traffic analysis by how many of the viewers were from Wilmington, Atlanta and distant locales.

Sports coverage has changed a lot over the years and the immediacy of news has been expedited by the worldwide web and social media.

The award-winning Daily Record remains unique as a locally-owned newspaper in this day and time. Most people don’t realize the value of that fact in terms of commitment to community.

The Adams family could have taken the money and run a long time ago, but their support has endured. That’s to the great benefit of this area every day.

I’m looking forward to working with the staff there, some of whom I have worked with before.

Mydailyrecord.com will be my new journalism home. My email will be [email protected]

To paraphrase Mick Jagger, it’s just a click away.
