After being held without at hit through five innings, Dunn scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a walk-off double from Cody Gilbert that drove in Braiden Arendt and Kasey Lee for a 2-1 win over Hope Mills in the championship game of the Dixie Youth District 11 Majors (12-and-under) baseball tournament in Lillington on Tuesday.
Reliever Wyatt Herring pitched two perfect innings, including three strikeouts, to take the win on the mound for Dunn. Starter Dale Martin pitched four innings, giving up no earned runs on two hits and three walks, with eight strikeouts.
Gilbert had a double and two RBIs, Arendt had one hit and one run scored and Kasey Lee had one run scored at the plate for Dunn.
An error and a passed ball led to Hope Mills’ lone run in the top of the second inning.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Arendt reached on a bunt single for Dunn’s first hit of the game, He stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Lee was hit by a pitch and took second on defensive indifference to put the winning run in scoring position. Gilbert followed with a double to score Arendt and Lee for the walk-off win.
Both teams will represent District 11 in state tournaments, with Hope Mills traveling to Stanley and Dunn going to Clarkton.
