Dunn teams take first-round Dixie state tournament wins

The Dunn Majors (12-and-under) All-Star baseball team takes a break.

Dunn teams went 4-0 on Saturday in opening games in Dixie Youth state tournament play.

The Dunn Majors (12-and-under) All-Star baseball team won 10-0 over Elizabethtown in Kenansville.

In Laurinburg, the Dunn Darlings (8-and-under, coach pitch) defeated North Stanley 16-4. The Dunn Angels (10-and-under) downed Topsail, 20-0. The Dunn Ponytails (12-and-under) took a 10-3 victory over host Scotland County.

The Dunn Majors All-Stars play Richlands today at 5:15 p.m.

Anthony Jones allowed two hits over five innings and had 13 strikeouts for Dunn on Saturday. Dunn had 14 hits with two each from Wyatt Lucas, Ross Stevens, Jalen Evans, Gabe Dapuyen and Braxton Davis.

Getting one hit each were Hunter Tyndall, Jones, John Nelson McLamb and Jamari Thompson.

In other games in Kenansville, Mount Holly topped Lillington and Coats fell to North Duplin. Coats is playing in the small-league bracket.

Ponytails softball

For Dunn’s 12-and-under softball All-Stars, coach Jeremy Bass spread out his pitching. Aubree Bass went one inning with three strikeouts and four walks. An error allowed two runs.

Emily Williams pitched two innings. She faced six batters, striking out two and getting four girls to ground out. Emily Scott pitched two innings, facing seven batters and striking out one. She forced four fielder’s choices.

Carmyn Ivey made a double play to end the fifth inning. Ivey pitched the sixth inning, striking out one and forcing two fielder’s choices. Scotland scored another run on an error.

Offensively, Ashley Bliven had a double and two singles. Scott had a double and a single. Bass had a single. Ivey had a sacrifice bunt. Marley Colville had a single and a double. Lindsey Knoll had a double.

Dunn scored two runs in the first, four in the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Scotland scored two in the first and one in the sixth.

Dunn plays Moore County today (Sunday, July 15) at 1 p.m.

Angels softball

Dunn will seek to continue its momentum as the 10-and-under All-Stars face Lumberton today at 1:30 p.m.

Eva Kate McLamb was the winning pitcher on Saturday and Reagan Adams got the save. McLamb pitched one inning without allowing a hit or a walk. Adams tossed the last two frames.

Zoey Godwin had two hits and four RBIs for Dunn.

“She was the player of the game,” said Dunn coach Cullen Clark.

Jordyn Christopher had three hits. Getting two hits each were Kara Beth Benton, Ella Clark and Samantha Carter.

Adams, Olivia Crumpler, Molly Bass and McLamb had one hit apiece.

Darlings softball

Hitting well in the state opener for the 8-and-under group were Macy Raynor, Janiah Amerson, Analeigh Jones, Abigail Johnson, Iliana Eason, Lauralee Harris and Kelsey Matthews.

Dunn plays East Columbus today at 3 p.m.
