Eagle varsity boys take 61-59 win in OT at Crossroads as Chestnut scores 20

HENDERSON — (Updated on Wednesday night with revised statistics) Justin Chestnut scored 20 points to lead the Cape Fear Christian Academy varsity boys offensively in a 61-59 Mid-Carolina Conference basketball win in overtime at Crossroads Christian on Tuesday night.

Chestnut added 10 rebounds for a double-double as the Eagles improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in league play. Chestnut made nine of 11 field goal attempts and two of three free throws.

Kayden Dunkins had 19 points and five rebounds.

Cade Godwin had nine points as he went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and claimed five rebounds.

Junior point guard Caden Scarborough, CFCA’s top scorer with a 17.7-point average, fouled out late in regulation with six points and nine assists.

“We had four players in foul trouble,” said Eagles coach Dwain Ellis. “Defense was key in this win Elijah (Ellis) and Cade handled the ball in the final minutes.”

Rounding out the scoring were Ellis with five points and Lathan Wilborn with two. Ellis pulled down four rebounds and had three assists. Wilborn had two rebounds.

Varsity Girls

The hosts prevailed, 75-33, despite a 17-point effort by Gardner-Webb softball signee Glenna McLamb for the Eagles (2-4, 1-1 MCC).

Also scoring were Ella Wilborn with five points, Savannah Autry (4), Lily Kate Dupree (3), Courtney Butts (2) and Mary Andemichael (2).

Junior Varsity Boys

CFCA improved to 2-0 with a 58-49 win at Crossroads in its MCC opener.

Eli Burns had 14 points. Cade Godwin tallied 13. Lathan Wilborn scored 11 with eight rebounds.’

Eli Shwaikeh added nine points. Fisher Stancil had seven points and five rebounds. Taylor Smith contributed two points and four assists. Tyson Stephens had two points.

Middle School

CFCA made the trip to Crossroads on Monday with the boys winning, 51-29, as Eli Shwaikeh had 31 points and seven rebounds. Braxton Register had nine points and 11 rebounds.

River Stancil scored six. Henry Smith had three points and Reid Jones netted two.

The hosts won the girls game, 22-19. Carolina Wynns had seven points for CFCA and Kinsley Godwin scored six.

Upcoming

The Eagles host Christ the Cornerstone of Laurinburg for middle school games on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m.

CFCA has middle school and varsity girls and boys conference games at home against Cresset on Friday starting at 4 p.m.
