Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity softball team took a 5-3 nonconference win at Freedom Christian in Fayetteville on Friday to improve 5-0 and end a winning streak for the Patriots that spanned two seasons and 36 games.

“So proud of these ladies,” said CFCA coach Tommy McLamb.

His daughter, Glenna, a Gardner-Webb signee, allowed three hits while striking out 13 over seven innings and protected the advantage created by a 3-run first inning.

The Patriots (11-1) had 10 shutouts this season and had allowed only one run, according to MaxPreps. Freedom is ranked No. 11 among all North Carolina teams for public and private schools.

CFCA’s opportunity to play the Patriots developed during the week after Wayne Christian pulled out of the Freedom Invitational. The Eagles accepted the invite although right fielder Larah Tripp, who had homered in an 8-1 win over Lawrence at CFCA on Tuesday, had another commitment.

Hailey Wangelin had two hits and scored a run for CFCA. Finley Phillips had a hit, scored a run and took away extra bases for Freedom with a diving catch in center field. Hailey Dupree had a hit and two RBIs.

McLamb contributed offensively with one hit and one run. Sailor Phillips had a hit. Megan Harrold and Caylee Braswell scored runs.

The Eagles added runs in the second and fifth. Freedom scored once in the first and twice in the fourth.

CFCA plays at Ridgecroft (6-1) in Ahoskie on Monday at 4 p.m., weather permitting.

Glenna Mclamb had 13 strikeouts on Friday as CFCA moved to 5-0.
