Eagles move into Holiday Invitational championship

Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity boys basketball team earned a berth in the CFCA Holiday Invitational championship with an 80-63 win over the Chatham Thunder on Wednesday night.

The Eagles (6-6) will meet Bethel Christian (5-2), a 79-58 semifinal winner over Lee Christian, in the final tonight at 7 p.m.

Deshaun Watson had 29 points, seven rebounds, four assists and six steals for CFCA on Wednesday. Zeke Brock added 15 points, five rebounds, 14 assists and five steals.

Jakson Cullen added 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor, including two of four behind the arc. Jackson Bolton came in late and made three of three from long range for nine points.

“It was one of our best games as a team,” said Eagles coach Dwain Ellis. “Jakson Cullen gave us a lift defensively,”

Cullen took over defensively on Dylan Mann, who paced the Thunder with 31 points, and limited him to two points in the third quarter.

David Okropiridze had six points in the win. Trevor McLamb scored four points, Barrett Raynor had three points and Reid Miller tallied two.

Chatham wins girls game

The Chatham Thunder girls topped CFCA, 41-25, in the opening game Wednesday.

Ella John Dupree had nine points to lead the Lady Eagles (7-2). Cailee Ray and Mariah Bell each scored five points. Trinity Olive, Perri Caroline Ennis and Laney Trainer had two points each.

Ennis had 10 rebounds and Bell had four steals.

The CFCA girls return to action Tuesday for the start of Sandhills Athletic Conference play against Northwood Temple.
