Eagles move into MCC Tournament matchups

Cape Fear Christian Academy’s basketball teams have completed regular season play and will compete in Mid-Carolina Conference tournaments in five divisions next week.

Varsity Boys

CFCA was topped, 51-48, at New Garden Friends in Greensboro on Friday night as lone senior Kalib Gatlin hit the deciding 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left on the Bears’ Senior Night.

Eagles coach Dwain Ellis called two timeouts and Caden Scarborough got a tying 3-point attempt, but it rimmed out.

CFCA overcame 10 turnovers in the first quarter to trail, 27-24, at halftime and the Eagles went ahead 42-34 before New Garden rallied.

Kayden Dunkins led CFCA (15-9, 6-3 MCC) with 17 points. Justin Chestnut scored 15. Scarborough finished with eight points.

Lathan Wilborn had four points. Elijah Ellis and Conner Parrish added two points each.

New Garden (11-11, 5-2 MCC) hosts Crossroads (15-9, 7-1) on Tuesday night with the winner earning the No 1 seeding for the conference tournament.

As the No. 3 seed, CFCA will play at the Tuesday night loser in the semifinals on Thursday.

Varsity Girls

The Lady Eagles did not make the trip to Greensboro because New Garden does not have girls teams.

CFCA, the No. 3 seed, will visit Lee Christian, the No. 2 seed, On Thursday at 6 p.m. in the MCC semifinals.

Junior Varsity Boys

The Eagles went unbeaten in the MCC regular season with a 58-40 win at New Garden as Fisher Stancil scored 18 points.

Eli Shwaikeh had 11 points. Lathan Wilborn tallied 10. Cade Godwin scored nine. Tyson Stephens had four points. Adding two points each were Eli Burns, Parker McLamb and T.R. Dailey.

Middle School Boys

CFCA took a 51-14 nonconference win at home against Old Mainstream Academy of Pembroke on Thursday before completing an unbeaten regular season in the MCC with a 42-26 victory at New Garden on Friday.

Eli Shwaikeh had 23 points for the Eagles on Thursday. Reid Jones scored six. Scoring four points each were Sawyer Tyndall, Ben Thompson and Sam Hudson. Jayce Barker had three points. Getting two points apiece were River Stancil, Henry Smith and John Andemichael. Garrett Chap Chapman had one point.

Shwaikeh scored 30 on Friday. Thompson had four points. Sawyer Tyndall and Luke Meyer each had three points. Jayce Barker added two points.

CFCA will host Lee Christian in the MCC semifinals on Monday at 5:15 p.m.

Middle School Girls

CFCA defeated visiting Old Mainstream, 41-6, on Thursday as Carolina Wynns and Knorah Whitmore each scored 12 points.

Bijou Hester had six points. Getting three points each were Finlee Ring and Ellie Shwaikeh. Lauren Jeffries and Hayden Deese added two points apiece.

CFCA hosts Lee Christian in the MCC semifinals on Monday at 4 p.m.
