Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity boys basketball team concluded its play in the John Jacobs Memorial Tournament at Cleveland on Friday with a 54-49 win over Nash Central.
After competitive losses to Rocky Mount and West Johnston in the ninth annual event, the Eagles improved to 7-8 and ended a 3-game losing streak.
“We just came out playing as a team,” said CFCA coach Dwain Ellis. “We shared the ball and moved the ball.”
Senior guard Zeke Brock led the Eagles with 27 points and was named to the all-tournament team.
Threes from Caden Scarborough and Brock helped CFCA to an early 6-0 lead. Brock hit from behind the arc as the first quarter ended to tie the score at 14.
The Eagles led 32-25 at the half but the Bulldogs (1-10) started the third quarter on a 9-0 run.
A three by Scarborough with less than three minutes to go put CFCA ahead to stay at 50-49. The Eagles kept Nash Central off the scoreboard in the final stages with Justin Chestnut and Lathan Wilborn contributing defensive rebounds out of a 2-3 zone down the stretch.
Brock’s drive with 1:30 left provided a 52-49 lead. The Eagles held the ball in the final minute and the Bulldogs had to foul to put CFCA in the bonus. Brock closed the scoring with 22 seconds left with a pair of free throws.
“Wyatt Medlin and Kayden Dunkins gave us some good minutes when we had some people tired or in foul trouble,” Ellis said.
Scarborough had 14 points. Wilborn scored six. Chestnutt added five points. Medlin tallied two.
CFCA will return to action on January 12 at home against Riverside Christian in a nonconference contest.
