Cape Fear Christian Academy had special events in soccer and volleyball this week and rose to the occasion with victories.
On Senior Day in soccer on Tuesday, the Eagles edged visiting Lee Christian, 3-2, as freshman Tripp Selph scored the deciding goal in the 74th minute. That contest followed a 7-0 middle school soccer win over Lee Christian when eighth-graders were honored.
Volleyball
CFCA held its second annual Spike Out Cancer event in volleyball on Tuesday, raising around $6,000 after collecting around $4,500 in 2021.
Wearing pink uniforms for the Spike Out, the Eagles’ varsity volleyball team defeated Lee Christian, 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-19), to finish the regular season 6-0 in the Mid-Carolina 1-A Conference. The outcome assured CFCA of sole ownership of its first varsity volleyball league title since 2002.
“There was a lot riding on the game to make us regular-season champs,” said CFCA coach Paul Hobbs. “We had to fight extra hard to be successful since we just couldn’t get our offense going. They just found a way. We started putting balls in tough places and using our short game to win.
“We just found a way.”
Stat leaders as the Eagles improved to 15-7 overall were Meredith Taylor in aces (5), Baily Dorman in kills (12), Abby Hobbs in assists (18) and Rhyleigh Horne in digs (15).
The CFCA varsity hosts Crossroads Christian in the MCC tournament semifinals on Thursday at 5 p.m. The Eagles junior varsity plays Crossroads at CFCA on Thursday at 4 p.m. in the MCC semifinals.
The CFCA Gold middle school volleyball team finished the regular season 18-4 in the Southeastern Conference with a 2-match sweep of visiting O’Neal on eighth-grade recognition day on Wednesday and will travel to St. John Paul II on Wednesday in the league tournament semifinals.
Soccer
The Eagles varsity had a 2-0 lead late in the second half with Selph assisting Jackson Breslin in the first half and Caden Scarborough adding an unassisted goal after intermission.
“The last 10 minutes were a bit of a dogfight, but with disciplined defense, we held them off,” said CFCA coach Michael Breslin. “Overall, I am very proud of how the guys played.”
Selph (11), Scarborough (7) and Breslin (5) have 23 of the team’s 24 goals.
The Eagles went 4-2 in the Mid-Carolina 1-A Conference regular season and will host Lee Christian on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the league tournament semifinals.
The CFCA middle school team got two goals each from Joel Harless and Tyson Stephens on Tuesday. Eli Shwaikeh had a goal and an assist. Ethan Beasley and Chris Crume had goals. Cade Godwin had an assist.
The Eagles are scheduled to host Lee in the MCC middle school tournament semifinals on Monday at 4 p.m.
