Cape Fear Christian Academy finished strong to earn a 3-3 draw with visiting Neuse Christian on Thursday despite trailing by two goals with just over five minutes remaining.

Caden Scarborough converted a penalty kick after drawing a foul in the box to trim the Lions’ lead to 3-2.

CFCA (2-2-1) pulled even on a follow shot by Thomas Honeycutt after a foul from a Neuse defender took down Parker McLamb, who was pursuing a through ball. Scarborough’s free kick caromed off the keeper and Honeycutt completed the improbable CFCA comeback.

“I told them at halftime we had to take advantage of our chances,” said Eagles coach Bill Parrish.

Fisher Stancil had CFCA’s first-half goal for a 1-1 tie at the break.

Scarborough had nine shots on goal Thursday. Getting two shots each were Honeycutt, Gunner Dorman and Taylor Smith.

Justin Chestnut had six saves behind a defense bolstered by Eli Burns, Chris Crume, Conner Parrish and .Lathan Wilborn.

The stunning outcome left Neuse at 2-0-1.

“Theyb were the most skilled and talented team we have faced,” said Coach Parrish.

Next action for the Eagles will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at home against Kerr-Vance, which is 0-4 against a tough schedule.
