Cape Fear Christian Academy’s spring sports varsity teams swept visiting Lee Christian on Tuesday with dominant wins.
The Eagles improved to 4-0 in softball with an 18-0 win and are ranked No. 3 in North Carolina among public and private schools by MaxPreps going into the Halifax First-Pitch Tournament in Roanoke Rapids on Saturday (March 5).
Kristina Kennedy and Cailee Ray pitched two innings each against the Falcons. Kennedy had five strikeouts and one walk. Ray had six strikeouts and allowed two hits.
At the plate, Ray was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run. Trinity Olive and Rhyleigh Horne also had home runs. Methodist signee Kim Bordeaux was 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, a walk and a hit by pitch. Mariah Bell was 1-for-1 with a single, two walks and a hit by pitch.
CFCA has three games today on Field 2 of Chocoyotte Park in Roanoke Rapids. The Eagles play Brunswick (Va.) at 10 a.m., Roanoke Rapids at noon and Rocky Mount Academy at 4 p.m,
Baseball improves to 2-1
CFCA defeated the youthful Falcons, 23-3, in baseball to improve to 2-1.
Zeke Brock and Cason Pope each had three hits and scored four runs.
Cole Godwin had two hits. Getting one hit each were Reid Miller, Landon Alphin, Barrett Raynor, Paul Maynor and Andrew Maynor.
Miller had 10 strikeouts while allowing three hits, two walks and one hit batter.
CFCA coach Andrew White was pleased with his team’s play after a home loss to Halifax on Monday.
“We came out focused and ready to play ball,” White said.
The Eagles visit Greenfield on Monday for a 4 p.m. game,
CFCA Girls Soccer
The Eagles defeated Lee Christian, 10-1, on Tuesday before falling to Wilmington Christian, 6-1, on Friday in a pair of home matches that put CFCA at 1-2 overall going into a Sandhills Athletic Conference match at Village Christian on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
“A lot of good things happened during our match with Lee Christian,” said CFCA coach Michael Breslin. “I’m always emphasizing the importance of the basics — working as a team, communicating, playing correct positions, paying attention to what’s happening on the field.
“The team put all of the pieces together and really dominated the game.”
Gracie Byrd had six goals Tuesday but missed Friday’s game due to a church activity.
Ella John Dupree had two goals and two assists. Lexie Crumley had a goal and an assist. Laney Avery had an assist.
The hosts had a 5-0 lead at the half. The contest was stopped in the 67th minute on the mercy rule. The visitors scored on an own goal.
Rosemary Sprague scored an unassisted goal in the 71st minute for CFCA on Friday.
