Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity boys basketball team completed a sweep at New Life Christian Academy in Fayetteville on Tuesday night by pulling away from a tie at 17 at the half for a 50-40 victory.
“We had several consecutive stops on defense, had patience breaking their press and got some big baskets by (E.J.) Bethea,” said CFCA coach J.D. Johnson.
Bethea led the Eagles (2-1) with 23 points. Marcus Owens scored 11 for the Eagles. Lucas Capalbo and Riley Adams had six points each. Scoring two points apiece were Ramiro Arrillaga and Michael Okoye.
New Life (2-2) was led by Phil Martin with 13 points. Reggie Walton had 10 for the Monarchs.
CFCA won the girls game, 59-4, as the clock ran continuously the last three quarters. The Lady Eagles improved to 1-1 after a good showing in a jamboree at Clinton on Saturday.
“It was a total team effort,” said CFCA girls coach Bobby Lamb.
Leah Brannon led Lady Eagles with 15 points. Kristen Bass scored 12 and Anslee McLamb added 10.
Aubree Bass had eight points. Meredith Taylor and Claire Parker scored six each. Jada Horne and Trinity Olive tallied one point each.
The CFCA junior varsity boys moved their record to 3-0 with a 69-60 win as DeShaun Woods and Zeke Brock had 19 points each. Dolan Adams had 14 points, Jaden Crumley scored 11, Reid Miller had four and Trey Tripp tallied two.
The CFCA varsity teams meet Berean Baptist in the first round of the Senior Classic in the Eagles’ gym on Friday night. Southern Wake Academy and Crossroads Christian play in the opposite bracket on Friday afternoon. The consolation and championship games are Saturday.
Middle school teams split
CFCA split its middle school season-opening games at home against Berean Baptist. The CFCA girls won, 41-10, before Berean took the boys game, 54-35.
Aubree Bass led the CFCA girls with 21 points and Rachel Clearman scored 10. Adding two points each were Ella John Dupree, Harmony Horne, Perri Caroline Ennis, Madeline Brocious and Bailey Dunn..
Jakson Cullen led the CFCA boys with 27 points. Wyatt Medlin scored six and David Clearman netted two.
The CFCA middle school boys host St. Patrick’s of Fayetteville on Thursday at 4 p.m.
