ECU tops Camels, 79-67

GREENVILLE — Jayden Gardner scored 22 and Brandon Suggs followed with 16 to lead four double-digit East Carolina scorers in a 79-67 win over Campbell on Saturday afternoon at Williams Arena in Minges Coliseum.

Of Gardner’s 22 points, 14 came from the free-throw line where he shot 14-of-16 as a part of the Pirates’ (3-7) 26-of-29 (.897) performance from the stripe compared to the Camels 9-of-13 (.680) effort.

In the final ten minutes, Campbell got as close as seven points when Milos Stajcic scored six straight for the Camels to make it 59-52 with 6:48 to play. Campbell got within eight points with 2:31 left but could not inch any closer.

Cedric Henderson Jr. scored a career-high 18 points for the Camels (6-3) on 6-of-9 shooting from the field including a 5-of-5 mark from the charity stripe.

Stajcic, Jordan Whitfield and Austin McCullough all followed with 11 points for the Camels who shot 25-of-64 (.391) from the field.

J.J. Miles added 12 points and Tristan Newton had 11 for the Pirates who led the fast break points category 28-7.

Campbell hosts Elon on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
