Erwin takes 10-U, Western wins 12-U in Tar Heel district softball

Erwin’s 10-and-under softball All-Stars won the Tar Heel district championship on Wednesday night. The 10-U Western Harnett All-Stars were runner-up in the district. On the front row from left are Addison Kirk, Aubrey Black, Kaylee Powell, Madison Wear, Jessika Constant and Lena Brazie. After falling in extra innings to Western Harnett on Monday and winning a pair of close games with Angier and Western on Tuesday, host Erwin completed its comeback in the Tar Heel Leagues District IV 10-under softball tournament with a 10-7 over Western Harnett on Field Two at Al Woodall Municipal Park on Wednesday to claim the district championship.

For Erwin, Madelin Hair had two hits and two runs scored. Kyndall Faircloth and Addison Tart each had two hits and one run scored. Bailey Johnson had one hit and two runs scored. Anslee Putnam and Shelby McLamb each had one hit and one run scored. Cameron Pope and Mackenzy Coley scored one run apiece.

For Western, Paige Robertson had two hits and two runs scored. Kaylee Powell had two hits and one run scored. Aubrey Black had two hits. Micah Wolvington had an inside-the-park home run. Jessika Constant, Madison Wear and Breonna Pace each had one hit and one run scored.

Western took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Erwin responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and two in the second to build a 6-3 lead.

Western continued to battle, keeping the game within reach.

In the top of the sixth, Powell got a two-out base hit and was able to get into scoring position at second base, but a ground ball back to Kayleigh Merritt, the pitcher, ended the game.

Erwin will represent District IV in the Tar Heel Leagues 10-under state tournament in Shelby from July 19-22.

Western wins 12-U

A third-inning rally powered Western Harnett to a 7-2 victory over host Erwin on Wednesday in the championship game of the Tar Heel Leagues District IV 12-under softball tournament on Field One at Al Woodall Municipal Park.

After losing to Erwin in the opening game of the tournament Monday, Western had to take the long road to the championship, beating Angier in an elimination game Tuesday and having to beat Erwin twice in the championship series, once Tuesday and once Wednesday.

Kaylee Cox pitched the complete game for Western, giving up one earned run on three hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts.

Gianna McDonald had two hits and one run scored, Riley Church had one hit and two runs scored, Kaylee Cox, Liz LeRouge and Allyson Vest each had one hit and one run scored and Lillian Heath scored once for Western.

Reese Penny, McKenna Moore and Carleigh Hamby had one hit apiece. Jenna Underwood and Camryn Conway scored one run apiece for Erwin.

Erwin held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning when Western capitalized on several miscues to plate five runs to take the lead. Western added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Erwin had the bases loaded with one out, but third baseman Kylie Harrington caught a line drive and stepped on third base before the runner could return for a double play to end the game.

Western Harnett will represent District IV in the Tar Heel Leagues 12-under state tournament in Shelby on July 19-22.
