The opening games were completed in the Tar Heel Leagues District III tournaments at Al Woodall Park in Erwin on Tuesday night. Double-elimination events will determine champions in 10-and-under baseball, 15-and-under baseball and 10-and-under softball.
In 10-and-under baseball on Tuesday, Western Harnett American and Sandhills advanced in the winners bracket with victories over Western Harnett National and Erwin, respectively.
In the first game, which actually began with half an inning played on Monday before storms in the area suspended play, Western Harnett American defeated Western Harnett National 14-5.
Reed Harris had three hits and two runs scored to lead Western Harnett American.
Nathaniel Moore, Willy Rivera, Matthew Mercer and Aaron Walston each had two hits and one run scored. Chris Gaslander had two hits. Alex Strunk had one hit and two runs scored. Aiden Kirk had one hit and one run scored. Mikkel Villacres and Cale Johnson scored one run apiece.
Parker Hodges had two hits, Colton Brafford had one hit and one run scored, Vincent Turner had one hit and Coleston Wright, Ethan McKoy, M.J. Terrel and Gabriel Moore scored one run apiece for Western Harnett National.
In the second game, Sandhills won a back-and-forth affair, 11-8, against Erwin.
Eli Burns had two hits and two runs scored while Chase Gregory had two hits and one run scored to lead Erwin.
Kymere McNeill had one hit and two runs scored. Brody Ennis and Palmer Ennis each had one hit and one run scored. Kaiden Jensen and Aiden McNeill had one hit apiece. Landon McLamb scored once.
Lucas Blackwood and Jake Grimsley each had three hits and three runs scored to lead Sandhills.
Western Harnett American and Sandhills meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Erwin and Western Harnett National meet in an elimination game following the first game.
In the 15-under baseball tournament, host Erwin beat Western Harnett 7-2.
The two will meet for the second game of the best-of-three series at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Erwin claims the championship with a win. A Western win forces a decisive game three immediately afterward.
10-and-under softball
Host Erwin defeated Parkwood 4-1 in the opening game of the Tar Heel Leagues 10-Under district softball tournament on Tuesday.
Sydney Bradham pitched the complete game win for Erwin, giving up one earned run on one hit and one walk, with 12 strikeouts.
Megan Harrold had two hits, including a double, and two runs scored to lead Erwin at the plate.
Mackenzie Lucas had one hit and one run scored. Bradham had a double. Grace Foisy, Leigha Roberts and Peyton Dunn had one hit apiece. Bryleigh Smith scored once.
Sydney Watson had a double and Sydney Cornwell had one run scored for Parkwood.
Erwin plays Western Harnett at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, with the winning team advancing to Thursday’s championship round and the losing team meeting Parkwood in an elimination game at 8 Wednesday.
