G-W defeats Lady Camels

BUIES CREEK — Alasia Smith scored 17 points and Gardner-Webb defeated Campbell, 63-50, in Big South Conference women’s basketball on Saturday afternoon at Gore Arena.

Layken Cox scored 14 while Jhessyka Williams and Ki’Ari Cain each added 12 for the Bulldogs (22-4, 14-0 Big South), who extended their winning streak to 14 games and clinched a share of the conference regular-season title.

Christabel Ezumah led all scorers with 20 points while adding 13 rebounds and a career-high three assists for the Camels (13-12, 8-6).

Gardner-Webb led, 30-27, at halftime but pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Camels, 15-2, over the final 6:06 in the period.

Campbell shot 39.1 percent (18 of 46) from the field, 26.7 percent from three (four of 15) and converted 10 of 15 free throws while Gardner-Webb made 46.3 percent (25-54) from the floor and six of 17 threes.

Brittany Staves recorded 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks while Erika Joseph added eight points for the Camels who have dropped three straight Big South games for the first time since the 2017-18 season.

The Bulldogs, who rank No. 6 nationally in turnovers forced, scored 18 points off 20 Campbell miscues and held a 32-28 edge in points in the paint.

The Camels head to Charleston Southern on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
