Cape Fear Christian Academy won its first state championship in girls golf on Tuesday at Keith Hills, coming back from second place on the second day from three strokes down to win by nine shots.
The Eagles won the NCISAA Division II title, which includes teams in the 1-A. 2-A and 3-A classifications.
“We are delighted and thrilled with this victory,” said CFCA coach Braxton Wynns. “We give all honor and glory to Jesus! It is by His grace and favor we were able to accomplish this most special achievement.”
CFCA trailed Westchester Country Day School of High Point 263-266 after the first round on Monday.
Scoring for the Eagles in the opening round were seventh-grader Carolina Wynns with an 81, freshman Annabelle Scott with an 87 and freshman Susie Min with a 98.
The Eagles had a team score of 258 on day two on an 80 from Wynns, an 85 from Min and a 93 from Scott.
CFCA finished with a total of 524. Cary Christian was second at 533 and Westchester finished third at 535.
The Eagles won a boys state championship in golf in 1977.
The individual winner was seventh-grader Lauren Davis of Cary Christian, who was at 148, four over par.
Wynns was in a tie for sixth at 161.
The Division I tournament also was held at Keith Hills. Medalist Jenna Kim, a sophomore who led Durham Academy (461) to the team championship, shot a 2-under 142.
