BUIES CREEK — Laren Vanarsdale scored 18 points and Ashley Bates added 16 as Hampton took down Campbell, 49-40, in women’s basketball on Wednesday night at Gore Arena.
Vanarsdale, who ranks fourth in the Big South Conference in scoring, surpassed her average on 6-of-9 shooting and a 5-of-6 mark from the line in the full 40 minutes of action. Bates hit 5-of-8 from the field and 6-of-7 from the stripe for Hampton (18-10, 14-5 Big South).
Taya Bolden led the Campbell charge with 13 points and finished just shy of a double-double with eight boards. Kianna Speight followed with nine points on 3-of-8 shooting with all three makes coming from behind the arc.
Campbell (21-7, 16-3), who trailed by as many as seven heading into the final period, cut the lead back to one point twice with the last stretch coming at the 6:31 mark when Taya Bolden finished inside to make it 36-35.
Hampton later pushed its lead back up to six, 43-37 with 2:12 to go before Campbell cut it back to three on the ensuing possession thanks to a triple from Shy Tuelle. The Pirates responded with a 6-0 spurt to end the contest.
Campbell committed a season-high 22 turnovers which the Pirates were able to convert into 20 points. The Pirates were also able to get out on the break as well outscoring the Camels 10-0.
The Camels close out the regular season on Saturday at Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m.
