Triton’s varsity boys basketball team capped off its play in the Cumberland County Invitational on Saturday with a 55-42 victory over Gray’s Creek at Terry Sanford.
The Hawks trailed 9-7 after eight minutes but took control in the second quarter and held a 24-18 lead at the half.
“It was a good effort defensively,” said Triton coach T.J. Morrison. “We started out slow. We were down 9-2 at one point and went on a 16-0 run.”
Travion Sanders had 19 points to lead the Hawks (6-4) on eight of 12 field goal shooting.
“We took some steps forward,” Morrison said. “I’m glad Travion has scored these last few games and had a good tournament.”
Sanders also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Derreon Burnett had 11 points for Triton. Kalil Hodges tallied nine and Colby Parker scored six.
Hodges finished with six assists and four steals. Emari White had five assists. Parker also contributed five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Burnett had five rebounds and three steals.
Myshon Smith had four points in the win. Adding two points each were Tre’sean Mcleod, Josiah Lett and Byron Smith.
The Triton varsity girls fell to 4-7 with a 46-43 loss to Westover at E.E. Smith.
The Hawk varsity boys play at Lumberton on Friday, Dec. 28.
