Tritn’s varsity football game at Fike on Friday night (Sept. 21) has been called off and the Hawks will not play at Overhills on Sept. 28.
The Jaguars are looking at playing make-up games in the Patriot 4-A/3-A Athletic Conference on Tuesday and Saturday next week. That reduces the priority of meeting the Hawks in a nonconference contest.
Triton has not played since a 23-15 loss to Laney on Sept. 7. The next game for the Hawks would be their Tri-County Six 3-A Conference opener at home against Western Harnett on Oct. 5. The Eagles are 0-4 and are scheduled to host South Johnston on Sept. 28.
“It’s not ideal,” Triton coach Ben Penny said of the schedule situation.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association may extend the season a week although not all of the schools in the state have had to postpone games. That decision is expected by Sept. 30.
Penny said if the season is extended the Hawks would try to make up a game with West Johnston that was originally scheduled for Sept. 14.
“Right now, we’re looking at an eight-game schedule,” Penny said.
