Triton’s wrestling team ended the regular season Wednesday with a 42-35 win over visiting Harnett County and Tri-County Six 3-A Conference rival Harnett Central.
“It was a little closer than I would have liked it to be,” said Triton coach David Weathersby. “But those that got to wrestle wrestled well. We’re still young. We’ve got a lot of sophomores and freshmen and we only have one senior. Future’s bright. We’ve just got to get ready for conference and regionals, which we should have at least four in the states, so that’s what we’ll focus on right now.
Multiple forfeits, including a double forfeit at the 106-pound weight class, meant only five actual matches took place.
Michael Carvin, at 285, Matthew Shorb, at 113, Nick Williams, at 145, Antoine Mosley, at 152, Ro’mello Cowan, at 170, Diontae Smith, at 182, and Tyre Cameron, at 220, took wins for the Hawks. Williams and Mosley each won by pin fall.
Jorge Cruz, at 120, Tommy Cornelius, at 126, Tyrone Montgomery, at 132, Casey Baria, at 138, Zach Lynch, at 108, and Joseph Roberts, at 195, each took wins for the Trojans. Cruz won by tech fall and Cornelius and Roberts each won on pins.
The match was also Senior Night for Triton’s Tyre Cameron.
“Tyre has been a help to me all season because he’s been here, done that,” Weathersby said. “We’re going to miss him. He’s left a great legacy here.”
Conference championships will be at Western Harnett on Saturday. Regionals will be hosted by Cleveland on Feb. 8-9.
