Triton’s varsity softball team won, 12-3, over visiting All American 3-A/4-A Conference opponent Pine Forest on Wednesday in a game postponed from Tuesday because of inclement weather.
“The first error game we’ve had,” said Triton coach Mark Whitman. “We haven’t had a whole lot of errors (Triton had three Wednesday). But we hit the ball hard. We needed a game like that, to battle. For the most part, there’s a couple of us that need to start hitting the ball better and I think they know who they are. We did some small things tonight that got us a few runs. It wasn’t great, but I’ll take it. A win’s a win. But for the most part, overall, not bad.”
Sophomore Aubree Bass pitched the complete game win for the Hawks (10-3, 9-0 AAC), giving up no earned runs on two hits, two walks and one hit batter, with seven strikeouts.
Bass also led Triton offensively by going 4-for-4, including a double, with two RBIs.
Kimah Warren had two triples, two RBIs and one run scored. Stephanie Davis had two hits, one RBI and two runs scored. Berkley Campbell had two hits and one RBI. T.K. McLean had two hits and three runs scored. Ava Blackman had a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Tristan Ennis had one hit. Shelby McLamb had four runs scored as a courtesy runner for Bass.
“Our approach wasn’t really good,” Whitman said. “We chased a couple of bad pitches up out of the zone. We’ve done that a lot here the last couple of games. That’s something we’ve got to work on.”
Sophomore Lauren McDonald had one hit and one RBI, senior Whitney Rice had one hit and junior Maddison Guard, freshman Jamya Harris and junior Mahogany Raynor-Brewington scored one run apiece for the Trojans (4-8, 4-5).
Triton scored three runs in the first inning, two in the third, one in the fourth and three apiece in the fifth and sixth. Pine Forest took advantage of some Triton errors to score three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Triton travels to Pine Forest on Friday before taking a week off while Harnett County Schools are on Spring Break. The Hawks first game after the break is at home against conference and Harnett County rival Western Harnett on April 19.
