Hawk boys win big on Senior Night

The Triton varsity boys and Harnett Central varsity girls each avenged losses in the rivalry from earlier this season on Friday night.

After the Central girls atoned for a stunning 51-45 setback at home on Jan. 28 with a 49-31 conquest of the Lady Hawks, the host Triton boys dealt Central a 100-72 defeat. The Trojan boys took the earlier matchup, 72-69.

The Hawk boys jumped out to a 26-13 lead in the opening quarter and outscored the visitors in every period in their final regular-season home game. Keionta Burnett, Travion Sanders, Myshon Smith, Josiah Lett, Leyton Kelly and Tilghman Pope were recognized on Senior Night.

Smith and Lett each had 26 points. Lett made 11 of 15 field goal attempts and led Triton in rebounding with 10. Burnett also had a double-double with 14 points and 13 assists.

Sanders had 13 points and nine rebounds. Jamari Amerson had 12 points. Ladrabious Eason had four points and seven rebounds. Kelly scored three. Jaden Geddie added two points and five rebounds.

The Hawks made 35 of 64 field goal tries for 55 percent.

Anthony Tomlinson had 27 points for Central and Tre Williams tallied 26. Williams had five steals and Tomlinson had four. Justin Perkins had 13 points and 10 rebounds as Central slipped to 10-11 overall and 4-6 in the Tri-County Six 3-A Conference going into the league tournament. The Hawks are 11-12, 4-6.

Senior Zoie Starling led the Triton girls (11-10, 6-4) with 14 points. Classmate Brittany Ireland, a softball standout, had six rebounds. Triton freshman Abby Hood had eight points and six rebounds.

The Central girls improved to 17-4 overall and 8-2 in league play.
