Triton played it safe in its second and final football scrimmage at Cape Fear in the Cumberland jamboree on Friday night.

“I thought we played well at times,” said Hawks coach Ben Penny. “We were cautious with all the rain that came in with some of our guys. J.J. (Cowan) ran it only three times and broke loose twice. That’s always good to see.

“We are continuing to find some depth up front on the offensive line. That’s the main focus right now. We are a little banged up going into next week. We will have Camauri (McDougald, running back, defensive back) back. He missed all of the preseason, so that is going to be good.

“We had some miscues in the backfield. We must tighten that up. We have a very veteran backfield, and I think they’re just a little anxious. Also, Jalen Evans continued to improve. He made some big-time throws and would have had some great runs but we agreed to a quick whistle on the quarterbacks.

“The scoring ended being, 3-2, Cape Fear, but no doubt we would have put up two more scores with Jalen running if not for the quick whistle.”

The Hawks were 4-6 last season and 4-3 in the All American Conferemce.

Triton opens the season at home against Jordan on Friday at 7 p.m. The 4-A Falcons were 4-5 overall and 2-2 in league play last year.
