Triton’s varsity boys soccer team rallied from an early deficit to take a 5-1 Tri-County Six 3-A Conference win over visiting Lee County on Wednesday night as Merced Mendez scored three goals.

Benny Villalvazo tallied twice as the Hawks improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in league play with a chance to avenge their lone loss to Southern Lee on the road Monday at 6 p.m. The Cavaliers won, 4-2, in overtime at Triton on Feb. 10.

Benny Villalvazo scored a goal on a free kick Monday in at 27:30 to tie the score at 1. Villalvazo gave the Hawks the lead on an assist from Francisco Martinez just 1:41 into the second half.

Merced had goals at 59:37, 73:45 and 78:36 with an assist from Villalvazo on his first score and Joshua Martinez credited on the final goal.

“We started much better than we did against Central the night before (7-3 Triton win at home), but then gave up an unfortunate goal to be down one early in the first half,” said Hawks coach Brian Foster. “Benny converted an amazing free kick in the first and that sort of brought us to life.

“We didn’t take our chances in the first half but we really were firing on all cylinders in the second. Lee County is a good team so I was very pleased with our performance. All of our second half goals came from turning them over with good defense or beautiful assists. We are dangerous when we share the ball and I’m looking forward to a battle with Southern Lee on Monday night.”
