Triton’s varsity football team lost its first game to a 3-A opponent, 12-7, to visiting Fike on Tuesday night in the completion of a suspended game.
The Hawks (2-4) were without senior running back Travion Sanders, who had run for 525 yards and five touchdowns in the first five games.
Sanders sustained a sprained ankle on Friday night as the teams played one scoreless quarter before play was halted due to lightning.
The Golden Demons got the winning touchdown on a 50-yard run by Mike Rand with three minutes remaining.
The visitors scored first when play resumed Tuesday as Octavius Carpenter caught a 14-yard scoring pass from Demari Cooper.
Triton went ahead 7-6 on Romello Cowan’s 17th touchdown of the season, a 1-yard run with 17 seconds left in the half.
The Hawks start play in the Tri-County Six 3-A Conference after an open date.
“We were unable to get the offense going without Travion,” said Triton coach Ben Penny. “Our lack of depth in the backfield showed.
“We have to piece together some kind of bye week now and rest up. Lee County comes to town next week (Oct. 11) and we have to be ready to compete.”
