Hawks have momentum after Senior Night wins

Triton’s varsity basketball teams enter the All American Conference tournament with momentum from Senior Night wins over Harnett Central on Friday.

The Triton boys defeated the Trojans, 69-43, to improve to 14-9 going into the first round of the AAC event at Overhills on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Sophomore Romello Pegues had 15 points for the Hawks in their fourth straight victory.

Seniors Will Heard (13), Jalen Evans (11) and Nate McKoy all reached double figures in scoring. Evans had five assists. McKoy pulled down six rebounds and Heard grabbed five.

“I was a little worried about our focus with Senior Night and just a lot going on,” said Hawks coach T.J. Morrison. “It as a good crowd and it’s a fun rivalry. I’m happy for our seniors. We had a lot of guys contribute.”

The Central boys (3-19) got 18 points from senior guard Jhalil Surles. The Trojans open the AAC Tournament at Westover on Monday at 6 p.m.

Lady Hawks

The Triton girls won, 62-16, to improve to 17-6 going into a home game Monday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the conference tournament against Westover.

Nashara Watlington-McNeill scored 15 points in the win. JaNiah Smith and Abby Hood added 13 points each.

Unique Cooke had nine rebounds for the Lady Hawks. Watlington-McNeill finished with four assists.

The Triton girls have won their last five.

Central (0-21) goes to E.E. Smith in the AAC’s first round on Monday at 6 p.m.
