Triton got an early defensive score and opened the varsity football season with a 41-12 victory at Union Pines on Friday night.

“We were very physical tonight,” said Hawks coach Ben Penny. “First play from scrimmage we had a strip sack for a touchdown that set the tone. Our three captains, J.J. Cowan, A.J. Dewar and Camauri McDougald had huge nights. We played well enough up front to move the ball pretty much all week. Still have some things we have to improve on but we are looking forward to next week.”

K.J. Lockamy had the initial fumble-causing sack and Dewar took the ball into the end zone.

“Alan Hinson got the nod at quarterback and ran the offense well,” Penny said. “Proud of him.”

Among the highlights on special teams were four kickoffs for touchbacks by Christian Silliezar.

The Hawks host nonconference rival South Johnston on Friday at 7 p.m.
