A 14-game losing streak for the Triton varsity baseball team came to a halt at an unlikely venue on Friday night — at Tri-County Six 3-A Conference leader Southern Lee.
The Hawks, who came in to the contest at 0-5 in league play, dealt the Cavaliers their first league loss, 6-3.
“We played great,” said Triton coach Joey Miriello, who saw little resemblance from his club to the group that had not tasted victory since a season-opening win over Village Christian. “Zy (McDougald, freshman right-hander) pitched great. We got hits when we needed them in big situations. … Everything seemed to come together.”
The Hawks scored five runs in the third and added a run in the sixth. Southern Lee mounted a comeback with three runs in the seventh.
Grayson Bradham went 4-for-4 in the win with a pair of RBIs. Parker Crews was 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs.
Seth Gurkins and Colton Neighbors each had two hits and an RBI for Triton. Josh McMillan had a hit and an RBI. Dalen Thompson had two hits.
McDougald went six innings. He allowed seven hits and three runs, two earned, while walking three and striking out five. Greg Godwin pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
The Hawks have a nonconference game at Village Christian on Monday at 4 p.m.
In other Tri-County baseball games Friday, host Western Harnett downed Harnett Central 14-5 after scoring eight runs in the first inning and Lee County won, 5-2, at Union Pines.
