The Triton varsity boys basketball team completed a nonconference sweep of visiting South Johnston on Tuesday night with a 59-47 win as junior Romello Pegues made seven of 11 field goal attempts in scoring 18 points for the Hawks (2-1).

Triton won the varsity girls game, 51-41, and took a 47-42 overtime victory in the junior varsity boys game.

South had a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter in the varsity boys game. Triton was on top, 25-23, at the half.

“Stagnant offense in the first half,” said Hawks coach T.J. Morrison. “Not moving the ball and sharing the ball. They seemed to want loose balls and rebounds more than we did.”

The Hawks outscored the Trojans, 19-15, in the third quarter and, 15-9, in the fourth quarter.

“We grew,” Morrison said. “Great rivalry. South has good kids, tough kids and they are well-coached.”

Khaleb Worth had 13 points for the Hawks on five of 10 field goal shooting. Brandon Surles had eight points and Terrence Williams added six points.

Worth pulled down 19 rebounds and blocked eight shots. Pegues had four assists and two steals.

Connor Lee hit five 3-pointers in scoring 20 points for the Trojans (1-2), who host Midway on Thursday. Kaleb Williams added 12 points for South.

Triton girls coach Whitney Williams guided her team to a 3-0 start against the program for which she played and previously coached.

Regulation play ended tied at 35 in the JV boys matchup.

The Hawks are scheduled to host Cape Fear High School of Cumberland County on Friday evening.
