Triton took two wins out of three varsity games against visiting All American 3-A/4-A Conference and Harnett County rival Western Harnett on Tuesday night. The Hawks won on the baseball and softball diamonds and the Eagles took the win on the girls soccer field.

Sophomore Aubree Bass threw a no-hitter as Triton won 10-0 in six innings against Western Harnett in softball.

“We came out strong,” said Triton softball coach Mark Whitman. “They threw it around a little bit, but we caused the throwing, I think. We played some small ball and made a little chaos and got them on their heels a little bit. The girls got bunts down. I was a little bit worried about coming back (from spring break) and having a little lull, but we had a good practice yesterday and made a couple of changes tonight. The big thing was we did the small things tonight to score our runs.”

Bass pitched the complete game shutout for the Hawks (12-3, 11-0 AAC), giving up no runs on no hits, one walk and one hit batter, with 10 strikeouts.

“It feels good,” Bass said. “We had a good bullpen session yesterday to prepare for it. It gives me more confidence and it definitely sets the tone for the rest of the week, because we have a big week.”

“I was proud of her tonight,” Whitman said. “She started out hitting the first batter of the game and she settled down and got in her groove. And we were playing good defense behind her and making the plays we needed to make.”

Senior Kimah Warren had three hits, including one double, and two runs scored to lead Triton at the plate.

Tristan Ennis had two hits, three RBIs and one run scored. Ava Blackman had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Stephanie Davis had two hits, one RBI and three runs scored. Gracie Byrd had two hits and one RBI. Berkley Campbell had two hits and two runs scored. Ashley Pope had one hit and one RBI. T.K. McLean had two RBIs.

Courtney Yow, hit by a pitch, and Sydney Jackson, on a walk, were the only two Eagles (9-5, 8-3) to reach base.

Triton scored four runs in the second inning, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Triton took a 7-1 baseball win over Western Harnett behind a complete game performance from senior pitcher Hayden Pope.

“One thing I talked to them about that Tuesday after we finished the Easter tournament (at South Johnston) was to go enjoy their break and come back like it’s a new season,” said Triton baseball coach Jacob Willis. “That’s what we talked about before the game, as well. And they came back out and they fought and did what they needed to do to get the job done.”

Pope pitched the complete game win for the Hawks (10-7, 7-3), giving up one earned run on three hits and three walks, with 14 strikeouts.

“He came out and was a dog from the first pitch of the game to the last pitch of the game,” Willis said. “That’s one of his stronger performances I’ve seen, for sure. And I hope we can just keep growing that. When you can pitch and string some hits together, good things happen.”

Triton’s Wyatt Avery had one hit, one RBI and one run scored. Jalen Evans had one hit and one RBI. Jackson Lanier had one hit and two runs scored. Anthony Jones had one hit and one RBI. Braxton Davis had a double and one run scored. William Meredith had one RBI and one run scored. Kenneth McKoy and Isaac Bennett scored one run apiece.

Zach Hooper had one hit and one RBI, Seth McLamb had a double and a run scored and Chandler Crews had one hit for the Eagles (7-10, 7-4).

Triton scored two runs in the second inning, one apiece in the third and fourth innings, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Western’s lone run was scored in the top of the fourth inning.

Western Harnett’s lone varsity win on the night came on the soccer field as the Eagles won a 2-0 shutout against Triton.

“We’ve been really focusing in practice on clean passes and communication, because I know we struggled with that at the beginning,” said Western Harnett girls soccer coach Emma Otten. “Just constantly doing more communication drills and passing drills, we were able to shape up and find the right formation that worked for us. Honestly, tonight was one of the best that they’ve played and it really showed in keeping their spirits up high. Being on an upper level of spirits really helped them today.”

Otten said the team has become a much more cohesive unit since opening the season on Feb. 28 with a 2-1 nonconference loss to Triton as part of a tournament at Harnett Central.

“General attitude,” Otten said. “The girls trust each other. At the beginning we were really divided, because they were at different skill levels and the girls really didn’t know how to work together because we didn’t have many practice leading up to that first game. Just also with the overall communication and trust in each other, we were able to take a step forward and become one as a team.”

Western improves to 7-10-1 overall and 6-5 in conference play and Triton drops to 8-9 overall and 5-5 in conference.

Sophomore Brianna Boyt and freshman Alexa Schliep scored one goal apiece and junior Lillyanna Campbell had one assist for the Eagles.

Senior Carolina Simpkins recorded the shutout in goal for Western.

Boyt scored her goal on a penalty kick in the first half. Schliep’s goal came in the second half on an assist from Campbell.

Triton hosts Topsail (11-4) for a nonconference softball game on Wednesday. Triton’s girls soccer team was scheduled to host South Johnston on Thursday, but that game was cancelled because South has to make up a home conference game against Smithfield-Selma.

Western Harnett is at Pinecrest (14-4) for a nonconference baseball game on Thursday.
