Three straight hit batters in the bottom of the seventh lifted Triton to a 4-3 walk-off win over C.B. Aycock in the second round of the NCHSAA 3-A baseball playoffs on Thursday night.
The Hawks trailed, 3-2, going into their half of the seventh when Chase Sewell led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Will Meredith. Zach Roberson’s backside grounder sent the potential tying run to third.
A throwing error allowed Sewell to come home and put Kason Brown on first.
Then came the succession of hit batters — Brady Wilson, Isaac Bennett and Ashton Dawson — forcing Brown around the bases with the game-ending run.
“Unusual, but we’ll take it,” said Triton coach David Reece.
The Hawks (15-10) are in the third round for the first time since 2016 when pitching gems by Logan Bender at Lee County and Tanner McLeod at Rocky Mount resulted in a trip to Topsail.
Triton started on the road in the postseason this year and used three runs in the seventh for a 4-2 win over South Central in Greenville.
C.B. Aycock, which finished, 12-14, knocked off host Currituck County, 4-2, to advance on Tuesday night.
Because the Golden Falcons were the No. 27 seed and Triton is No. 22, the Hawks got the home field advantage.
The Hawks will travel to face the winner of No. 14 West Carteret’s contest at No. 3 Eastern Alamance.
Bennett, a Louisburg signee, started and went five and one-third innings against CBA. He yielded three runs in the first, two earned, before settling in. He allowed two hits and four walks while striking out five.
Brayden Bates went the final one and two thirds with one hit and two whiffs in recording the win.
Triton has a 2.22 team earned run average.
The Hawks scored twice in the second to cut the lead to 3-2.
Collecting hits for the hosts were Wilson, Roberson, Meredith, Alan Hinson and Bates.
