HC girls streak ends, UP shares title

February 9, 2018 By Dunn Area Sports Staff

Union Pines topped visiting Harnett Central 36-28 in varsity girls basketball on Friday night to share the Tri-County Six 3-A Conference regular-season championship with the Trojans.

The Trojans took a 49-40 win in the boys game as Jalaan Signal had 14 points. Montrey McAllister added nine points. Chase Mullins had seven points and seven rebounds after missing a 67-65 double-overtime loss to Triton at home on Wednesday night.

Kaizer Ray had five points for the Trojan. Adonye Fubara had four points and seven rebounds. Adam Jackson and Kasey Perkins scored four points each. Justin Perkins had two points.

Both girls teams finished with 9-1 league records.

Central’s girls (19-3) had a 15-game winning streak come to an end.

Union Pines drew the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament and will host the semifinals Tuesday. The championship games for the girls and boys will be at Campbell’s Gore Arena on Thursday.

Central led 10-6 at the end of the first quarter on Friday night but the Lady Vikings held a 17-4 advantage in the second quarter. Union Pines outscored the visitors 2-0 in the third period.

“Baskets didn’t fall for us, but we didn’t have defensive intensity to pick us up when they weren’t falling,” said Central girls coach Chelsey Cabe. “We didn’t work together and play as a team. Got to regroup and be ready for the tournament.”

The tournament starts Monday. Central’s girls will have a first-round bye.

The Trojan boys will host Union Pines in the first round Monday at 6 p.m.
