Harnett Central’s varsity football team held a 7-0 over visiting Smithfield-Selma with 5:44 left in the first quarter when play was suspended because of storms in the area on Friday night.
The game is scheduled to resume Monday at 6:30 p.m.
After Smithfield-Selma’s opening drive stalled near midfield, the Spartans attempted a fake punt, but it was stopped in the backfield by Mike Watson. One play later, Jaden Bryant threw to a wide open Trevonne Williams for a 32-yard touchdown pass. Liam Peebles kicked the extra point.
After another unsuccessful Smithfield-Selma fake punt, again stopped by Watson, Central was facing 3rd-and-8 at the Spartans’ 36-yard-line when play was halted because of lightning.
After a delay of nearly an hour and a half, the decision was made to suspend play until Monday at 6:30.
Harnett Central will be playing two rescheduled games next week. In addition to Monday’s game, the Trojans travel to Midway on Friday night for a game postponed from Sept. 6 because of Hurricane Dorian.
