Triton’s varsity soccer team won a 3-0 shutout over visiting Midway on Tuesday evening in a game that was postponed from Monday due to weather.

“The intention was to hold the ball as much as possible because Midway is good,” said Triton coach Brian Foster. “Midway is good from front all the way to the back. And their keeper (sophomore Keller Godwin) was on fire tonight. Since they can possess the ball, I said, ‘We’ve got to make them work. We’ve got to keep the ball. We can’t go straight up the field every single time.’

“We were overly direct way too many times tonight. Too many straight balls to a straight run does not work. We’ve got to spread it a little bit more. We slipped some through and didn’t take advantage of them. But they played hard. That’s what I’ve always said about this team from the get-go. Even when they don’t always play smart or play how I want them to, they always play hard.”

The loss was the first of the season for the Raiders (1-1)

Senior Omar Hernandez led the Hawks (2-1) with two goals. Sophomore Marquis Rosado had one goal and juniors Tommy Lopez and Carlos Amaya had one assist apiece. Junior Braxton Davis recorded the shutout in goal.

“You don’t have to coach Omar,” Foster said. “You tell him you trust him and you let him go out there. Everybody on this team trusts him. And what he does better than a lot of guys I’ve had is he shares the ball with his teammates. He wants the ball from his teammates and he gives it back every now and then, which makes them want to pass it to him even more.”

Hernandez put Triton on the board early with a goal assisted by Lopez at 10:47.

At 16:38, Rosado put a shot on goal that deflected off of a Midway defender and into the net.

At 77:16, Hernandez put the game out of reach with a goal assisted by Amaya.

Triton travels to Smithfield-Selma (0-1) on Wednesday and is at home against rival South Johnston on Thursday. Midway is at home against Sampson County foe Lakewood (1-0-1) on Wednesday.
