BUIES CREEK — Trailing by as many as 15 in the third quarter, High Point rallied with a 15-0 run to start the fourth period and held off Campbell 70-69 in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday at Gore Arena.
High Point closes out the regular season at 22-7 overall and 15-3 in Big South Conference play, while Campbell fell to 18-11 on the year and 10-8 in conference games.
The Camels led 36-33 at the halftime break, and overpowered the Panthers with a 22-12 third quarter, extending their lead to 58-43 with 1:13 to go in the frame on a pair of free throws from Luana Serranho.
Trailing 58-45 heading into the fourth, HPU scored the first 15 points of the final stanza, taking a 60-58 lead at the 5:00 mark, its first lead since the second quarter (2:58). Campbell pulled within one at 70-69 on two Shy Tuelle free throws after a Panther intentional foul with 0.9 seconds remaining, but could not get off a final shot attempt.
HPU outscored Campbell 25-11 in the fourth frame, hitting 8-of-16 shots from the floor and 8-of-12 free throws, and owning a 16-5 edge on the boards. Campbell, meanwhile, shot 1-for-12 in the quarter, but connected on 9-of-10 tries from the charity stripe.
Emma Brockrath paced the Panthers with a game-high 19 points, adding five rebounds and five assists. Bria Gibson also posted 14 points, while Shea Morgan added 12 points and two steals. Miya Bull tacked on nine points and nine rebounds.
Hayley Barber collected 18 points and four assists for CU, with Lauren Carter and Caroline Bowns notching 11 points each. Carter added eight rebounds and two blocks, and Taya Bolden also registered eight boards.
HPU scored 22 points off 18 Campbell turnovers and outscored the Camels 30-16 in the paint.
Next up for the Camels will be the first round of the Big South Women’s Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, March 12, at Gore Arena. The sixth-seeded Camels will host 11th-seeded Longwood at 7 p.m.
